【Reformed Environmental Impact Assessment in China: An Evaluation of Its Effectiveness】
Article by Yang Yang, from Kyoto University, Japan.
As one of the essential preventive environmental protection measures, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been developed in China for more than four decades. Although it has evolved into a fairly comprehensive and technically adequate system, there still exist many problems as to its performance. This study creatively proposes an evaluation framework appropriate for the Chinese context, elaborates on the reforms on EIA carried out since 2015 and evaluates the effectiveness of the reformed EIA system. This study is mainly based on document analysis and literature review, which is supplemented with in-depth interviews. It may helpfully provide comprehensive information and understanding of the EIA system for future EIA effectiveness evaluation research in the country.

So I lived my life alone, without anyone that I could really talk to, until I had an accident
with my plane in the Desert of Sahara, six years ago. Something was broken in my engine.
And as I had with me neither a mechanic nor any passengers, I set myself to attempt the
difficult repairs all alone. It was a question of life or death for me: I had scarcely enough
drinking water to last a week.
The first night, then, I went to sleep on the sand, a thousand miles from any human
habitation. I was more isolated than a shipwrecked sailor on a raft in the middle of the ocean.
Thus you can imagine my amazement, at sunrise, when I was awakened by an odd little voice.
It said:
”If you please– draw me a sheep!”
”What!”
”Draw me a sheep!”

I think success in studying comes from being highly motivated to study a specific subject area. Therefore the student should choose which subject they’re interested in. By way of an example, I had a friend who studied science in his high school because his parents pushed him down that route, but he hated it and so didn’t get very good results. He still graduated and managed to get a place at university where he studied law, and he became a top student because law was what he was interested in.
