【What is a market economy?】
How many people around you love you? Open the address book and count, when you are in trouble, how many people can help regardless of the cost? The answer is obvious: we can only be loved by a small number of people, and we can only love a small number of people, but we need the help of thousands of people all the time.
Look at our current food, clothing, shelter and transportation, how many people are involved, how many people are helping us? But they don't love us, they don't know us, why is that?
The answer is market economy.
Adam Smith used a dichotomy to distinguish between the two phenomena. People are selfish, but have compassion, and can love, but love is very limited. So, love alone is not enough for us to survive. We eat our dinner every day not because the baker, the butcher, the brewer, they love us, but because they pursue their interests.
Here, you'll probably understand. The market economy is the rule of interaction between strangers, and we don't apply it to our families and the people we love. Of course, we do not hold strangers to the standards of family.
It is precisely because Adam Smith saw clearly this two-sidedness of human nature that he found a solid foundation for the market economy, and it is precisely because of this that he is known as the father of the market economy.
