The pulmonary function, standing balance and gait stability were found to be significantly affected by both scoliosis and backpack carriage without any significant interactive effect. Increased backpack weight was shown to significantly increase the biomechanical and physiological demand for both children with and without scoliosis. As children with scoliosis have generally lower performance than normal, the limit of backpack weight recommended for normal children based on the changes observed in various biomechanical and physiological parameters should not be suitable for children with scoliosis. However, there is still a lack of evidence whether backpack carriage would accelerate curve progress or not. Further biomechanical study of the direct effect of load carriage on the children's spine with deformity would be needed. Moreover, further investigation on the effect of bracing, severity of scoliosis,carrying duration and methods would be useful to provide additional knowledge of the effects of backpack carriage for children with scoliosis.
