IF THOU MUST LOVE ME
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
If thou must love me,
let it be for nought,
Except for love’s sake only.
Do not say,
'I love her for her smile…
her look…her way,
Of speaking gently…
for a trick of thought,
That falls in well with mine,
and certs brought,
A sense of pleasant ease
on such a day',
For these things in themselves,
Beloved, may,
Be changed, or change for thee,
-and love, so wrought,
May be unwrought so.
Neither love me for,
Thine own dear pity’s wiping
my cheeks dry,
A creature might forget
to weep, who bore,
Thy comfot long,
and lose thy love thereby.
But love me for love’s sake,
that evermore,
Thou may’st love on,
through love’s eternity.

Sonnet 87
Farewell! thou art too dear for my possessing,
And like enough thou know'st thy estimate,
The charter of thy worth gives thee releasing;
你的才德给予你自由的权利;
My bonds in thee are all determinate.
For how do I hold thee but by thy granting,
And for that riches where is my deserving?
The cause of this fair gift in me is wanting,
And so my patent back again is swerving.
Thy self thou gav'st, thy own worth then not knowing,
Or me to whom thou gav'st it, else mistaking,
或者是把我看错了,才给我深情;
So thy great gift upon misprision growing,
Comes home again, on better judgement making.
Thus have I had thee as a dream doth flatter,
In sleep a king, but waking no such matter.

Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day
——Shakespeare
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate; Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimmd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st:
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
