▼ 1. 随便
Whatever
A: Hey, let's go to the cinema tonight. Or what about the museum?(嘿,今晚一起去电影院吧,或者去博物馆?)
B: Yeah, whatever.(随便吧。)
3-minute passion
A: I would like to learn piano therefore I will need to buy one.
B: Oh, I suggest that you think carefully before you buy one as you are always a '3-minute passion' person.(我建议你考虑清楚,因为你总是3分钟热度。)
Rain check
A:How about a cup of coffee?
B:Rain check.(改天吧。)
play it by ear
由此意引申出来后,"play by ear"强调事件的“即兴”成分,没有计划、依据当时情况而行事(to let things go as they may),很有“边走边看吧,走着瞧”的味道。
例句:
A:What are you doing tonight?
B:Oh, I don't know...I'll just play it by ear.(不知道唉,没啥安排,看着办吧)
to beat a dead horse
A:Dad, are you sure we can't get a new computer?
B:Son, we talked about this and the decision was 'no'. You are beating a dead horse."(孩子,这事儿我们已经谈过了,答案是‘不添’。
to fall into one's trap/setup
Don't buy his words. You will fall into his trap.(别信他的话,都是套路。)
onlooker/spectators
在英文中,"onlooker/spectator"意为旁观者、观众。
Don't drag me into this. I am just an innocent onlooker.(不要拖我下水。

STAR&BRUCO (6+): PART 8
Star arrived just in time. Bruco was breaking the shell of the chrysalis to emerge once again outside. The young foal watched, fascinated. Finally, Bruco managed to free himself from the cocoon; he had changed appearance, and now, around his body, he had small, contracted wings.
"You've really grown wings!" Star exclaimed happily, "and now?".
Bruco looked at him. He had a mature and wise look now. He didn't say anything but slowly spread his wings. They were marvelous! Surrounded by an intense black that made them appear soft and silky like velvet, they shaded into an intense electric blue that expanded to caterpillar's body, half black and half electric blue. He even had two antennae!
Star was impressed.
"But how is it possible?".
"My transformation is complete, and I have grown up," Bruco commented satisfied.
Even his voice had changed; it was now deep and warm.
Star suddenly felt strange, almost uncomfortable. "What exactly does it mean that you've grown up? Grown up... how much?".
"Let's say I'm halfway through my life", Bruco replied.
The foal stared at him with big, shiny eyes.
"But you and I… will always be together, right?"
Bruco didn't answer immediately; now he knew well that "always together" was a very short time for him, but he didn't want to make his young friend suffer.
"Of course, for the duration of our respective lives," he replied then, before to give him a big smile.
"Hey, what's with the long face? I've worked hard to grow these wings, let's fly!".
Star shook off that unexpected feeling of sadness and neighed happily; in those weeks, he had waited for nothing else!
