German Chancellor Angela Merkel has defended the initial EU investment protection deal with China as essential to assist European firms to continue to make gains in the country, said an op-ed published by the New York Times on March 19, adding the chancellor has reiterated that her country doesn't need to take sides in a brand new Cold War. The article said Merkel's position toward China is against U.S. President Biden's strategy, which is isolating Beijing on commerce and geopolitical points. The op-ed also cited Taicang City, east China's Jiangsu Province, as a great example of the close cooperation between Chinese and German companies.

What is feared as the White House's smear campaign against its own top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci has backfired with an op-ed penned by Peter Navarro, head of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, that fails fact-checking. USA Today, where the article was published on Tuesday, has attached a post-publication note saying the article, though elaborating the similar comments about Fauci seen on other outlets, "did not meet USA TODAY's fact-checking standards" because of factual errors with "several of Navarro's criticisms of Fauci." The White House, recently alleged of feeding local media with material against Fauci, has chosen to distance itself from Navarro's piece even before the USA Today's editorial note, by claiming that it didn't sign off the article. "He made a statement representing himself. He shouldn't be doing that," Trump said of Navarro as he spoke with reporters before departing the White House for an event in Georgia.
