On this singularly chilly and dreary afternoon when the somber clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, and the breath of Autumn's being brought to the hustling and bustling city a rain so penetrating that a long walk in the perennial shrubbery was now totally out of the question, I, lying reclined in the sofa and pondering over the nettlesome fancies that crowded upon me, found a sense of overwhelming gloom had pervaded my pensive spirit and that, as the melancholy shades of evening drew on,  my  soul was sinking Lethe-wards.
