cry for the moon
If he wished to be a lunarnaut, he would cry for the moon.
cry over spilt [spilled] milk
She cried over spilt milk.

He made many new acquaintances during his absence in London.
表示某人不在某个地方应该是be absent from some place (名词也一样:one's absence from some place) , 如 :He was absent from lectures yesterday. He absented himself from lectures yesterday.
▫️ from常用于表示“分隔”、“离散”、“不在” 等意思,如:break from the past (与过去决裂), find a cover from the storm (找到一个躲避暴风雨的地方),depart from the usual way of doing things (不再采用通常做事的办法),dismiss someone from office(免除某人职务),divert from the correct way (偏离正确的做法),divorce from her husband (和丈夫离婚),escape from being drowned (差一点儿淹死),expel somebody from school (开除某人学籍),retreat from social life (逃避社交),prevent somebody from doing something (不让某人做某事)。
严格地说,he is absent in London 中的 in London 和 absent 没有直接关系,he is absent in London 的意思是“他目前不在本地(他通常所在的地方),而在伦敦”,所以during his absence in London是指“他在伦敦(的那一段)时(间)”。
