There is such a story in the Parable Sutra: Once a man was travelling in the wilderness. Suddenly he was chased by a rampageous elephant.
The traveler then fled in whatever way available and found a deserted well by which there was a big tree. Having descended into the well along tree roots, the traveler realized that two rats, black and white, were gnawing the tree roots, and each of the four sides of the well was inhabited by a venomous snake. As for the bottom of the well, it was occupied by a deadly dragon.
At this very moment, five drops of luscious honey dripped down from a beehive in the tree. The traveler momentarily forgot his fear while he was indulging in the honey. However the wobble of tree provoked the bees to sting the traveler. Then a wild fire coming from nowhere was burning the tree.
In this story, the wilderness is a metaphor for ignorance, and the traveler is a metaphor for sentient beings. The elephant represents impermanence, and the well represents the stage before liberation in the course of samsara. Then the tree is analogous to our life, and the two rats of black and white are analogous to night and day.
Rats'gnawing of the tree roots means our life is elapsing moment by moment, and the four venomous snakes represent the four great elements that make up our body, i.e., earth, water, fire and wind. The honey is compared to the five desires for wealth, lust, fame, fine food, and sleep. The bees represent wrong mindfulness, and the wild fire represents aging and sickness. As for the deadly dragon, it is a metaphor for death.
After hearing this story from the Buddha, the king developed a deep sense of renunciation to samsara.
