方先生曾说到他自己的成名的原因,无非是“历史要寻找这样一个人”,因为“江浙这一带,是水墨人物画的‘窝点’,必然会产生我这个类型的画。”
他反复强调:“我画了一辈子中国画,感觉中国画的最基础的东西,必须遵循中国的传统艺术法则。西方的艺术绘画,可以作为一种参照来吸收,这样你在画当中怎么变它都不会离开它根本的东西。”
方先生总是念及潘天寿先生经常讲的,“用笔必须搞好,中国画没有用笔就没有意义了。”

Mr. Fang once said that the reason for his own fame is that "history is looking for such a person", because "this area of Jiangsu and Zhejiang is the 'den' of ink figure painting, which is bound to produce my type of painting."
He repeatedly stressed: "I have painted Chinese painting all my life, and I feel that the most basic things of Chinese painting must follow the laws of traditional Chinese art." Mr. Fang always mentioned what Mr. Pan Tianshou often said, "the use of a pen must be done well. there is no meaning in Chinese painting without a pen."
