Current archaeological data show that the stone chimes were already widely distributed in the Yellow River basin and along the Great Wall area in the north from the Longshan era, the formation period of Chinese civilization, to the Xia and Shang dynasties. So far, the prehistoric stone chimes discovered are all single, large-bodied “teqing,” among which the earliest and more concentratedly-yielded are the four chimes unearthed from the large tombs of early Taosi culture, invaluable for studying the origin and development of chimes and the sounding feature of early Chinese percussion instruments.
